The decision on which digital camera to buy is one of the questions I get from the general public more often than any question about actual Photo quality.

One can proffer opinions until blue in the face but it really comes down to a lot of personal preference as to whether you want something pocket sized or a ‘pro-like’ SLR or even something of an amalgam of the two.

Digital cameras are great aren’t they? You no longer have to buy film for the camera and never have to worry about setting up a dark room to develop them into prints. No, you can just fill up your memory card and happily either print direct from the camera to a printer or check out the quality first on the computer (and Photoshop if you are rich enough!) and make a few teaks before offering them to the printer. You can delete the files that you just don’t want to keep, you know the one with your thumb obscuring the lens! And you can store your photos on disk for a future ‘slideshow’.

The Decision on Which Digital to Buy

The decision as to which you buy can depend on many aspects such as what you want to do with your photos, save to pc and print 6 inch by 4 inch or to make a wall mural of your family! I personally prefer the SLR (single lens reflex) with a couple of descent lenses so that I can be ready for all occasions and yes when you have one beware of the inevitable question:

"ooh you have a fancy camera and take good photos, how about taking photos of our daughters wedding?"

With technology advancing forward at the speed of light in not just camera design but the quality of the ‘chip’ in camera virtually any digital camera ‘will do’ for general use, compact, variable lens of full SLR with quality arriving for less than $400 it

surely is the golden age of the digital camera.

As a general rule digital camera prices are usually less if you can source the one you know you want from an online store such as Amazon or Ebay or the myriad of other online stores that you can get a great digital camera deal. If though you are wanting to see the camera ‘in the flesh’ so to speak you will have to look around the local digital camera stores to get a ‘feel’ as to which camera will suit you best.

Beware of the 'Hungry' Salesman

Beware of the offline purchase though as the salesman will want to steer you to an ‘upgrade’ digital camera that you may not have any use for and be left with something that you just cannot use to its best abilities. But these stores offline can be a great

source of information and tips from real photography ‘professionals’ and of course if you buy a digital camera locally you always have the option to take it back personally if it does go wrong. At the specialty shops, you will be able to find that the salesman and

people who own the shops know a lot about the products and will be more than willing to help you learn to get more from your camera.

In the specialist stores, they will help you get a feel for the right camera for you (and then you can buy it cheaper online!) and if buying an SLR one of the main factors I look for is the ‘fit’ to my hand, how easy it is to get to the main controls and how comfortable it is to hold.

Before I purchase a camera I will always seek out a professional ‘review’ of the cameras abilities so that I can make an

‘educated’ decision on which digital camera would suit my needs best. I probably do have a preference for the Nikon brand but you cannot really go wrong with any of the big name brands and my preference is mostly down to ‘feel’ and comfort in my hand as I fid the Nikon digital cameras to be ‘roomier’ for me to hold.

For those who aren’t using a digital camera for professional purposes, then you don’t really take about the quality of the camera compared to the price. You will want to think about going with a lower resolution so that you can save some money.

You need to make the decision quickly and stick to it as to what price you want to pay and aim to choose a digital camera

that is ‘good enough’ for your needs in the price range that suits your pocket. Do not fall fowl of waiting for the ‘next best thing’ as

the camera world moves very quickly to update and new technologies are always under development and so if you wait for that next one you will never buy a digital camera!

Digital cameras are fun and should be bought with the intent of taking every opportunity to photo everything within lens sight and with some lenses you can take pictures from a great distance and produce great results.

Things to consider When looking for a Digital camera

Things to consider are size of the sensor opposed to the pixel count (SLR cameras generally have much larger sensors to alleviate much of the quality loss at low light), with cameras coming onto the market with more than 12 megapixels and less than $100 there really shouldn’t be a problem finding a camera for you!

Don’t want to change lenses? Then a compact digital camera or a fixed lens ‘slr look’ digital camera will do the job with

lenses on the fixed lenses offering up to 420 mm lenses there really shouldn’t be any need for any change of lens!

Does the make of digital camera matter? As I said earlier the major players in the market have exceptional ranges of

cameras that can take a while to choose from! But any camera from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax et al will be a good

purchase whichever digital camera you buy!

So to conclude you really should check out the reviews and choose a digital camera within your price range that will suit your needs, you may be very surprised as to how cheap you can get a very descent digital camera for these days!
